English and the World of Work

English and the World of Work is a 50-hour course, the second of three Secondary III English Language Arts courses. To achieve the two competencies targeted in the course, adult learners will analyze and practise a variety of work-related texts, mostly informative, with some of the texts including explanatory or persuasive elements. By the end of the course, learners will be able to report on jobs they have chosen to research, to produce résumés and letters of application, and to take part in job interviews. Accompanying video and audio resources are available online.

Content

Situation 1: Finding proper job ads that match the learners’ interests and skills, and learning the language used in job ads. Situation 2: Dealing with workplace communication with superiors and colleagues. Includes training, safety in the workplace, customer service, and resolving conflict. Situation 3: Developing a résumé as a persuasive piece of writing based on an inventory of skills. Includes various types of written résumés as well online portfolios and video résumés. Situation 4: Writing a variety of business letters and email. Situation 5: Experiencing job interviews from the perspective of the employer, planning and preparing, and helping to choose candidates. Situation 6: Practising being interviewed to develop the skills necessary to make a good impression. Includes preparing for an interview and controlling body language.

Recipients

Adult learners who need to do the Secondary 3 English Language Arts program.

Prerequisites

Equivalent to Sec 2 level and preferably ENG-3101.
